Obituary for Bill
It is with great sadness that I write to let the HRA family know of the passing of one of its members, Dr. William “Bill” Gitar who died at the age...
The Hiamalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) recently organized a free temporary health camp at Gosainkunda, a famous pilgrimage site during Janaipurnima festival located at an altitude of 4,380 m (14,370 ft) in Rasuwa District. Gosainkunda is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his Trishul into the mountain to extract water so that he could cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. Thousands of pilgrims visit this lake during Janaipurnima.
Gosainkunda is located at very high altitude and pilgrims tends to ascend fast, so many of them are prone to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) as they are not aware of the symptoms of mountain sickness and other mountain hazards.
Like other years, this year on 8th Aug 2019 a 7 members medical team left to Dhunche from Kathmandu and reached Gosainkunda on 11th Aug and started working until 15th Aug 2019.This temporary health camp provided medical facilities to 589 patients this year. Among them around 50 were seriously ill and was treated with medicine and oxygen in the camp and helped them to bring down to lower altitude.
HRA is not only treating the patients but also providing the information about altitude sickness and Gosainkunda by distributing the brochures to the pilgrims. HRA organized a talk program for the people of Suryabinayak and Madhyapur Thimi Municipality to provide them information about altitude sickness and gosainkunda trek. A slide show was presented and brochures were distributed on that program. The brochures were also distributed in Dhunche to the pilgrims going to Gosainkunda.
We are very grateful to the Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal (MMSN) for their great help by providing doctors every year for the health camp. Similarly, our acknowledgement goes to NMA, CDO office, DHO Rasuwa, Langtang National Park, Kalijung Gan, District Police Rasuwa and Gosainkunda Area Development Committee for there help and support.
