The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) is a non-profit organization established in 1973 with an objective to reduce casualties in Nepal Himalayas. One of the most important tasks of HRA is to try to prevent deaths from Mountain Illness that confronts foreign trekkers and Nepali people. Since its inception, it has manned a small aid-post in the Khumbu village of Pheriche (4,250m.) Similarly, since 1981 another permanent aid-post in Manang (3,550m.) has been in operation. Both Manang and Pheriche aid-posts are manned twice yearly during the trekking seasons by HRA volunteer doctors.
The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal has started the first-ever medical camp at Mt. Everest Base Camp called HRA Everest-ER since Spring Season 2003. This Medical Camp was started to Mark the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgey Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. The aim was to provide medical support to the climbers, support staff and visitors and promote safety in the Himalayas.
HRA is regularly conducting a temporary health camp at Gosainkunda (4,380m.) during Janai Purnima festival to provide medical help to Nepalese pilgrims for free since 1997.
These Aid-posts provide inexpensive and free medical treatment to the local community and, trekking and mountaineering support staff as well. Every year about 4000 people receive medical treatment from HRA health centers and about 100 seriously ill people are coordinated to evacuate them to the hospitals for further treatment and evaluation. We also provide talk on altitude sickness daily from our aid-posts and head office in Kathmandu.
Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal has been able to continue its service over the last 48 years with the proceeds from the sell of HRA logo and souvenir such as T-shirts, patches, hats etc, and modest donation from individuals and organization.
