Mountain Safety Training Workshop for Mountain Porters

The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal organized a mountain safety training/workshop for mountain porters on 2nd and 3rd May in Katmandu. The propose of the program was to educate porters about the accidents and illnesses that can  happen while going to the mountains  as well as other related environmental and health related issues such as High Altitude Sickness, Frostbite, Snow blindness, Hypothermia, general health and hygiene, porters equipment/clothing , porter ethics,  role of porters towards the environmental and socio cultural behaviors. Additionally, the training program was to provide information about the importance of insurance to the porters.

It was believed that the program was quite fruitful on its objective. The program was scheduled with talks, multimedia presentations, and interaction on various subjects.

 

The response from the participants’ was overwhelming. They said that the program was very special and they had a great opportunity of learning. They said that every year large number of new porters join this profession and they should get a chance to participate this kind of training /workshop. They said that this kind of training workshop should also be conducted outside the Kathmandu valley such as Bensi Sahar, Pokhara, Lukla, Dhunche etc.

 

Earlier on, an opening ceremony was chaired by Mr. Anj Kaji Sherpa, Chairman of HRA.  The General Secretary Mr. K. D. Khowanju welcomed and highlighted the objective of this training workshop.

 

Chief Guest of the program Mr. T. C. Pokhrel who is also a founder Chairman of the Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal recalled the time of the inception of HRA. ‘In 1973, the year of inception of HRA, no one knew why people die in the high altitude. The aim of establishment of HRA was just to help to decrease the causalities and make the Nepal Himalayas safe,’ he added.

 

Mr.  Subhash Niraula from Nepal Tourism Board, Mr. Ang Tshiring Sherpa President of NMA, Ms. Bandi Nima Sherpa acting President of TAAN and Bikram Neupane, Immediate Past Chairman of HRA also addressed the program.

 

Training/ workshop was coordinated by Mr.Prakash Adhikari, Chief Executive of HRA.

 

Total 74 participants, 8 out of them female were awarded with the participant certificate by Mr. Ang Kaji sherpa, Chairman of the Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal.
