A Seminar titled Mountain Medicine: Sharing the South Asian Experience was jointly organized by B.P Koirala India- Nepal Foundation, Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal & Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal on 9th August 2004 at Kathmandu.

 

His Excellency, Mr. VP Haran Charge d’ Affaires, Embassy of India inaugurated the ceremony. He added, Nepal being the Himalayan Kingdom has much experience and research regarding such issues. It was the first effort in Nepal to perform such Seminar. He also launched www.MMSN.org.np, a website of Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal.

 

Dr. Buddha Basnyat, Medical Director of the Nepal International Clinic and the Himalayan Rescue Association NEPAL presented the welcome speech. He expressed that Nepal is a proper country where we should talk about mountains and mountain sickeness. He further said that we should have meeting here regarding such matter because Nepal is rich in Mountain resources.

 

In the same way, Dr Vidyasagar Casikar, the head of dept. of Neurosurgery, St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore and is currently a consultant neurosurgeon in Australia,  presented a paper work on the topic “Cerebral Hypoxia at High Altitude Olfactory System Regulates”.

 

Another participant, Dr. Buddha Basnyat, the medical director of the Nepal International Clinic & The Himalayan Rescue Association presented his paper work on the topic “Neurological Problems at High Altitude”.

 

In the same way, Dr Nely Shrestha graduated from Institute of Medicine Maharajgunj presented her paper work on the topic “New Mechanism of AMS, HAPE AND HACE”

 

Dr. T Venkatesh, a renowned professor of biochemistry and biophysics at St. Johns Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore also presented his paper work on the topic “The Mechanism of Frostbite” & Lead Poisoning at High Altitude.

 

Dr. Abdul Jabbar Bhatti, from Pakistan also presented a paper work on the topic “Nutritional Needs at High Altitude”..

 

Dr.Pretam Neupane, a founder member and Vice President of Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal too presented his paper work on the topic “Children in the Mountain”.

 

Dr. S.K Jha, graduate from Armed forces Med College, Pune also presented a paper work on the topic “Cerebral venous thrombosis at high altitude”.

 

At the outset, Mr. Ang Kaji Sherpa, chairperson of HRA thanked all the participants and organizer for their contribution.
